Well, I guess I owe anyone still following my blog an explanation.
Needless to say, I missed my ‘late September’ deadline. It turns out that these next few chapters of FROM THE SHADOWS have required more research than I originally anticipated. That said, I’m still working on it and plan to have chapter 4 out soon. I hope the wait will have been worth it, but I guess that’s ultimately up to each of you.
In the meantime, I know that at least some of my followers are aspiring authors like me, so I thought I’d share something I found on Amazon. After all, I owe you all something for how patient you’ve been with me. This is really more of a broad-strokes review as opposed to an in-depth review, but I hope you get something out of it.
What was it that I found on Amazon? A link to a FREE ebook edition of HIEROGLYPHICS, horror master Arthur Machen’s thoughts on what makes truly great literature and what separates it from mere ‘entertainment’. It’s essentially the closest he ever came to making one of those “how to write” books.
To be honest, I only agree with about half of his points, but given the undeniable mark his fiction left on the horror genre (and arguably the fantasy genre as well), I still think it’s worthwhile to at least hear the man out, and who knows? After reading it, you might think I’m crazy for agreeing with only half of it instead of all of it.
That said, if you don’t have time to go through the whole thing, the best parts are the prologue (because it’s hilarious), the first chapter (because it lays out his main theory on what makes great literature) and the appendix (because it explains HOW an author can apply his theory).
